Rossendale Ramblers Kick Off New Year with Historic Wycoller Walk
Rossendale Ramblers: New Year Walks in Lancashire

The Rossendale Ramblers hiking group has ushered in the new year with a brisk winter walk, exploring some of Lancashire's most picturesque and historic landscapes. After a break over the festive period, the group reconvened for a classic countryside ramble.

A Glorious 'Pipe-Opener' from Colne

On a recent Sunday, 12 ramblers gathered at Ball Grove Park in Colne to embark on a six-mile route. Despite the intensely cold air, they were treated to gloriously sunny conditions for what was described as a perfect 'pipe-opener'. The walk offered stunning views across the valley towards the iconic Pendle Hill.

The itinerary was rich with local interest, taking in the striking Atom panopticon sculpture and the near-deserted ancient village of Wycoller. This historic spot, famed for its connections to the Brontë sisters, provided a beautiful backdrop with its charming old Clapper Bridge and Packhorse Bridge and the atmospheric ruins of Wycoller Hall.

Upcoming Rambles for Your Diary

The group has two further walks scheduled for January, catering to different levels of stamina. The first is another six-mile walk on Sunday, January 11. This route will start from the conservation village of Holcombe, exploring the area around Holcombe Hill before finishing at a local pub for a New Year lunch.

A more challenging expedition follows on Wednesday, January 14. This is a 10-mile walk from Clough Head that promises vigorous exercise. The route will traverse Oswaldtwistle Moor and a section of the disused railway between Accrington and Rising Bridge, before climbing through farmland onto Haslingden Moor and 13 Stone Hill.

How to Join the Rossendale Ramblers

All walks led by the Rossendale Ramblers are free to attend for newcomers, offering a fantastic opportunity to explore the Lancashire countryside.
