The RSPB has issued a call for UK households to refrain from leaving seed out for birds from May 1 until Halloween. During the summer and autumn months, the risk of disease spreading among birds is higher, and natural food sources like seeds and insects are more plentiful, according to the charity.
Feeding Guidelines
From 1 May to 31 October, the RSPB advises: "Pause filling your bird feeders with seeds or peanuts. You can continue to offer small amounts of mealworms, fatballs or suet." From 1 November to 30 April, households can resume feeding a full range of bird foods, including seeds and peanuts.
Hygiene Recommendations
"Busy bird feeders can become hotspots for disease. To help keep birds healthy, it's vital to keep things clean," the RSPB states. The charity recommends: cleaning bird feeders and water baths at least once a week with hot soapy water and disinfecting with a non-toxic disinfectant like Ark-Klens or a mild bleach solution; removing old food or droppings from beneath feeders; moving feeders to a different spot each week to prevent debris buildup; placing feeders in different areas to reduce bird congregation; avoiding feeders under roosting spots like trees; not using feeders with flat surfaces such as bird tables or window feeders, as these pose higher disease risk; feeding in moderation so food is eaten within one to two days; keeping food dry to prevent disease spread; changing water in bird baths daily; and helping birds find natural food by planting bird-friendly plants like sunflowers, teasels, and ivy.
The RSPB emphasizes that a pond is the best way to provide water for birds and other wildlife.
