Pensioners Slash Energy Bills by £300 with Garden Data Centre
Couple cut bills by £300 with garden data centre

As energy bills surged across the UK this autumn, one innovative Essex couple has found a radical solution, replacing their traditional gas boiler with a small data centre installed in their garden.

A Revolutionary Heating Solution

Pensioners Terrence Bridges, 76, and his wife Lesley, 75, have seen their energy costs plummet from £375 to just £40 after installing a groundbreaking HeatHub system. The technology, created by Thermify as part of UK Power Networks' SHIELD initiative, captures the warmth generated by more than five hundred mini-computers.

The system works by using oil to transfer heat produced by the data centre directly into the couple's hot water and heating system. This innovative approach provides constant, reliable heating without relying on gas.

Life-Changing Impact for Vulnerable Household

For Lesley, who suffers from spinal stenosis and experiences severe pain when temperatures drop, the consistent warmth has been transformative. The couple live in a two-bedroom bungalow where maintaining a comfortable temperature is crucial for her health and wellbeing.

"You don't need to go to a sauna after coming here," Lesley remarked about their now consistently warm home.

Terrence expressed his delight with the system, stating: "It truly is brilliant. I'm over the moon that we got picked to trial this out. You can't fault the heating system, it is a one hundred per cent improvement on what we had before."

Green Benefits and Wider Implications

Beyond the significant financial savings, the environmental benefits are substantial. "We're not burning any gases, so it's green, it's environmentally friendly," Terrence emphasised.

The SHIELD initiative aims to make the transition to Net Zero more accessible for low-income households, including those in social housing who might otherwise struggle to afford heating or access low carbon technologies.

The project combines several innovative solutions:

  • Distributed data centres for heating
  • Solar panels
  • Battery storage
This combination helps to intelligently balance energy supply and demand across the network.

As energy prices continue to concern households nationwide, this Essex trial demonstrates how creative technological solutions could provide both financial relief and environmental benefits for British families.
