Energy Bills to Fall by £300 for Millions: British Gas, Octopus, Eon Confirm Savings
Energy bills slashed by £300 for millions of UK households

Millions of households across the UK are set to receive a significant financial boost, with energy bills poised to fall by hundreds of pounds in a major cost-of-living relief measure.

The government has confirmed a pivotal change to household energy charges, which will see average annual bills drop by £150 from April 2026. This adjustment forms the cornerstone of a dual support package that could slash total bills by around £300 for eligible customers.

Major Suppliers Pass on Government Savings

Leading energy suppliers, including British Gas, Octopus, and Eon, have confirmed they will pass these savings directly to consumers. Following an announcement by Chancellor Rachel Reeves in the Budget, the reductions will apply to customers on both variable and fixed tariffs.

This move ensures that almost all households in the UK will see their bills decrease. Crucially, it also protects those who have recently switched to fixed deals to escape high rates, guaranteeing they will benefit from the upcoming price drop without needing to take any action.

Richard Neudegg, director of regulation at Uswitch, highlighted the advantage for consumers: "Households can now confidently sign up with these suppliers for a fixed deal that will effectively save them money twice. They can secure cheaper rates now during the coldest months of winter, and they’ll see their prices drop even further in April without having to take any further action."

Warm Home Discount Expansion Offers Further Relief

Separately, a crucial winter support scheme is being expanded. The Warm Home Discount, worth £150, is being applied to eligible customers' bills between November and March.

This winter, around six million households will receive this discount, a substantial increase from previous years. The eligibility criteria have been broadened, meaning an additional three million households will benefit.

Qualifying groups now include:

  • Those receiving Universal Credit.
  • People claiming the Guarantee Credit element of Pension Credit.

This expansion marks a significant change, as previously only a limited subset of Universal Credit claimants were eligible for the support.

A Welcome Start to the New Year

The combined effect of the government's energy charge reform and the expanded Warm Home Discount scheme represents a substantial intervention for family finances. With suppliers committed to implementing the changes, households can expect a noticeable reduction in their energy costs, providing much-needed respite from high living expenses as they move through 2026.
