Foster Grandfather Achieves Significant Energy Savings with Solar Technology

A foster grandfather from West Yorkshire has dramatically reduced his household energy expenditure by embracing renewable technology, achieving annual savings of £732 on his utility bills. Stephen Jagger, who cares for his three grandchildren in an end-terrace property, has seen his monthly energy costs drop by more than a third following the installation of solar panels and battery storage systems.

Transformation from Traditional to Renewable Energy

Previously, Mr. Jagger paid £160 each month for combined gas and electricity services. After joining the innovative Tenant Power tariff, operated through a partnership between Octopus Energy and Together Housing Group, his monthly bills have decreased to just £99. This represents a substantial reduction of £61 per month, accumulating to significant yearly savings that ease financial pressures on his household.

"Having the solar panels and a battery is a big change and a great way to save a lot of money on your household bills," Mr. Jagger explained to GB News. "My energy bills have dropped from £160 every month, to just £99. That's huge."

Adapting Household Routines for Maximum Efficiency

The integration of battery storage has allowed Mr. Jagger to optimise his energy usage patterns. He now schedules energy-intensive household tasks for the afternoon, after solar charging has replenished the battery capacity. "I've had to switch the order of doing things to after the sun has charged the battery," he noted. "If the battery is charged fully and then I do all my tasks, it's like running the chores on free electricity."

Describing his decision to participate in the scheme as "a leap of faith" after receiving initial information through a letter, Mr. Jagger now actively encourages other households to explore similar renewable energy options. He praised the support received, adding: "The Octopus team has been great!"

Expert Insight on Smart Energy Management

Nigel Banks, Zero Bills Director at Octopus Energy, detailed the technological approach: "Octopus Energy smart controls the tech to store solar energy in the battery when it's abundant - like on a sunny day - and export excess solar energy to the grid at peak times when the grid needs it." This intelligent system maximises both personal savings and grid stability.

Regional Commitment to Energy Affordability

Tracy Brabin, Mayor of West Yorkshire, highlighted the broader regional initiative: "We're joining forces to slash energy bills for hundreds of households in the region. With over £3million of new investment, we're supporting Together Housing Group to install solar panels and reduce household emissions."

She emphasised the dual benefits of such programmes: "By making homes warmer to live in and cheaper to run, we'll put more money in people's pockets and create a fairer, greener region." This commitment reflects growing efforts across the UK to address both energy affordability and environmental sustainability through practical household solutions.
