Octopus Energy offers customers £600 for energy-saving tasks
Octopus Energy £600 reward for energy-saving tasks

Octopus Energy has launched an initiative that could put hundreds of pounds back into customers' pockets ahead of the Christmas period. The energy provider, which competes with major suppliers like EDF, EON, and Ovo, is encouraging households to complete eight straightforward tasks that could leave them approximately £600 better off.

Simple adjustments for significant savings

One of the most impactful changes involves adjusting your boiler's flow temperature, which controls the temperature of water when it leaves your boiler. Octopus Energy recommends setting this between 55 and 60 degrees, as the default setting is typically too high. According to innovation charity Nesta, this single adjustment could make your home feel just as warm while cutting your energy bills by 12%, saving you up to £65 annually.

Another substantial saving comes from your laundry habits. By ditching the tumble dryer and opting to air dry your clothes on a washing line or clotheshorse, the Energy Savings Trust estimates you could save around £50 each year.

Home efficiency and smart habits

Heating and insulation improvements offer further opportunities to reduce costs. Sealing gaps around your home can save approximately £80, while properly using your thermostat is crucial. Instead of using it as an on/off switch, setting it and leaving it between 18-21°C for when you need it provides more comfort and efficiency. Remarkably, turning your thermostat down by just 1 degree could save up to £145 on your annual energy bill.

Other tasks include putting an insulation jacket on your hot water tank (£40 saving), switching off appliances on standby (£45 saving), and reducing shower time to just four minutes (£60 saving).

Lighting makes a bright difference

Lighting accounts for around 11% of a typical household's electricity bill. Octopus Energy highlights that switching to LED bulbs, which use 70-80% less electricity, can lead to substantial savings. With the average UK home having about 34 bulbs, the Energy Savings Trust estimates savings of £4-£10 per bulb, per year. This could add up to a potential £136 saving for a typical household. An additional £7 per year can be saved by simply making sure to switch off lights when leaving a room.

By implementing these eight energy-saving measures, UK households can not only reduce their carbon footprint but also enjoy significant financial benefits, making this winter more affordable and environmentally friendly.
