Sir Keir Starmer has stepped down as Prime Minister, but not before delivering a £117 annual reduction in energy bills for millions of UK households. The savings, locked in until the end of June, are part of the government's Energy Company Obligation scheme, which automatically lowers unit rates for gas and electricity from 1 April.
How the Energy Bill Savings Work
The government confirmed that households do not need to take any action to claim the savings. The exact amount each household saves depends on energy usage and tariff type. Some smaller energy suppliers that were never part of the Energy Company Obligation scheme have already passed on these savings to customers. For energy used after 1 April, the reduction will be applied directly to the unit rate, and suppliers will contact customers with new rate details.
Starmer's Resignation and Succession
In his resignation speech, Starmer stated: “I will also give my successor my full and unequivocal support, knowing they will inherit a Britain that is far stronger and fairer than the one I inherited two years ago, better prepared for the challenges ahead and better able to ensure the Labour party secures a second term in office.” Andy Burnham, the newly elected MP for Makerfield, is widely expected to take over as Prime Minister next month. According to the Guardian, Burnham plans to begin preliminary conversations with Labour MPs regarding cabinet positions. A source close to Burnham said: “We want a bit of space this week to see where things land. Andy would rather deal with the world where you are, rather than rushing ahead.”
Political Reactions and Future Plans
Labour MPs have called for a “shock and awe” policy blitz to demonstrate change under Burnham. One MP commented: “The next general election will be won or lost in first 100 days – it’s very difficult to change people’s views after that.” The energy bill boost is seen as a key achievement of Starmer's tenure, with supporters championing it as evidence of the government's commitment to easing the cost of living.
