A Wirral-based author is revolutionising how children learn about recycling through his popular book series featuring colourful characters and engaging stories that have already sold over 800 copies nationwide.
From Wheelie Bins to National Recognition
Andy Hickin, writing under the pen name Walter Thomas, has captured young imaginations with his debut book Walter the Wheelie Bin and Friends. The story introduces children to recycling concepts through friendly characters like Recycle Ralph and Tracy the Trowel, helping them understand what items belong in their curb side bins.
The book's success attracted attention from the British Aerosol Manufacturers Association (BAMA), whose chief executive Patrick Heskins praised Andy's approach. "I was impressed with just how engaging Andy's stories are for children and how they would be the perfect platform for communicating recycling messages about aerosols," Heskins stated.
Industry Partnerships Expand Environmental Message
Following his initial success, Andy partnered with BAMA to create a second book, Mr. Shufflebottom's Garden Adventure, which specifically teaches children how to recycle aerosol containers safely. The book features an exciting endorsement with branded WD-40 cans appearing in the story.
Alina Darragh, global environmental program director at WD-40 and chair of BAMA's board of directors, commented on the collaboration: "The way in which the simplicity of recycling aerosols is explained so effectively to young readers reminds us of the value behind storytelling."
Andy's employer, Hydrokem Aerosols, where he works as purchasing manager, has also voiced strong support for his literary efforts. Managing director Richard O'Mahoney commended Andy's dedication to promoting sustainability through children's literature.
A Legacy Story and Future Projects
The origins of Andy's book series stretch back nearly 18 years, beginning with a simple story written by his father-in-law, Michael O'Neill. With Michael's blessing, Andy expanded the tale into the engaging children's book it is today, making the series a meaningful tribute to Michael's memory.
Beyond publishing, Andy regularly hosts interactive reading workshops in schools, using his stories to spark conversations about recycling and environmental care. These hands-on sessions have become popular tools for making sustainability fun and memorable for young learners.
The series continues to grow with a third book, Walter's Football Match, set for release in the new year through TAUK Publishing. This installment has gained endorsement from Tranmere Rovers Football Club, adding a local sporting twist to his eco-friendly universe.
Andy explained his mission: "The main aim of the book is to get young readers into the mindset of recycling and looking after our planet as the norm. This will become second nature as children mature into adults that they will pass on to future generations."
Both Mr. Shufflebottom's Garden Adventure and Walter the Wheelie Bin and Friends are currently available on Amazon and eBay, with the third book scheduled for release soon.
