Neath Port Talbot Seeks Views on Historic Bridge Restoration for Active Travel
Neath Port Talbot Bridge Restoration Consultation Launched

Residents of Neath Port Talbot are being invited to share their opinions on ambitious proposals to restore a significant local landmark and enhance community connectivity. The council is seeking public feedback on the Newbridge Road Bridge Active Travel Link project, which aims to breathe new life into a Grade II listed structure while promoting healthier, greener transport options.

Revitalising a Historic Asset for Modern Travel

The core of the scheme involves the careful restoration and reopening of the historic Newbridge Road Bridge. This initiative will establish a vital connection between Riverside Road and Newbridge Road, forming a dedicated, safe corridor specifically designed for pedestrians and cyclists. The project represents a thoughtful blend of heritage conservation and contemporary urban planning.

Key Features of the Proposed Scheme

To ensure the route is both accessible and secure, several infrastructure improvements are planned. A brand new shared footway will be constructed along Riverside Road, providing ample space for walkers and cyclists. Concurrently, traffic-calming measures will be implemented on Newbridge Road. These steps are designed to significantly improve safety for all road users and actively encourage a shift towards more sustainable modes of transport.

Funding and Strategic Context

Neath Port Talbot Council has successfully secured essential funding for this transformative project from the UK Government's Levelling Up Fund. The restoration of Newbridge Road Bridge is not an isolated endeavour; it is a key component of the wider Sandfields Masterplan. This overarching strategy seeks to make walking, cycling, and wheeling for everyday journeys a practical and attractive choice for everyone in the community.

How to Participate in the Consultation

The council has launched a formal public consultation to gather resident input, which will run from Monday, February 2, 2026, until Sunday, March 15, 2026. To facilitate discussion, three drop-in events have been scheduled at two convenient locations:

  • Aberavon Leisure Centre, The Princess Margaret Way: Thursday, February 12, 2026 (9am-5pm) and Friday, February 13, 2026 (1pm-7.30pm).
  • Aberafan Shopping Centre, Port Talbot: Saturday, February 14, 2026 (9am-noon).

At these events, residents can discuss the proposals in detail with representatives from Neath Port Talbot Council and their consultants, Amey. Feedback can also be submitted via an online survey. For those preferring a physical copy, paper surveys will be available at the listed drop-in events and at Sandfields Library, where they must be returned before the consultation deadline of March 15, 2026.

Anticipated Benefits of the Restoration

The restoration of the historic Newbridge Road Bridge is projected to deliver a multitude of advantages for the local area:

  1. It will create a safe and direct route for pedestrians and cyclists travelling between Sandfields and Port Talbot Docks, supporting local regeneration and improving everyday access.
  2. The active travel link will enhance connectivity to Port Talbot Docks, making employment and training opportunities more accessible without reliance on a car.
  3. The project ensures the restoration and ongoing maintenance of a Grade II listed bridge, preserving an important piece of local history for future generations.
  4. By promoting walking and cycling, the scheme encourages residents to adopt healthier, more active lifestyles.
  5. The dedicated route will provide an upgraded path for active travel, reducing the risks associated with sharing busy roads with motor traffic.

Council Support for the Project

Councillor Wyndham Griffiths, Neath Port Talbot Council's Cabinet Member for Strategic Planning, Transport and Connectivity, expressed strong support for the initiative. "Restoring this Grade II listed bridge will offer more convenience and greener, healthier ways to travel, such as cycling and walking," he stated. "This is a local project for locals to benefit from, so I encourage people to give their views on the plans. It would be great to see the bridge being put to good use for our County."
