Octopus Energy Announces Revolutionary Kerbside EV Charging Discount

Octopus Energy has unveiled a groundbreaking initiative that promises to transform electric vehicle ownership for millions of UK households. The energy giant is introducing a "first-of-its-kind" 50% discount on kerbside charging specifically designed for drivers who lack private driveways.

Making Electric Vehicles Accessible to All

Through its Octopus Electric Vehicles (OEV) division, the company is now offering new customers the ability to charge their electric vehicles on-street for as little as 22.5p per kilowatt-hour. This translates to approximately 7p per mile, representing a significant reduction that makes switching to electric vehicles more affordable than ever before.

The initiative initially launches at 20,000 charge points across the United Kingdom, with plans for rapid expansion to include more brands and locations in the coming months. This strategic rollout aims to address one of the most significant barriers to EV adoption among urban and suburban residents.

Substantial Cost Savings for Drivers

The financial benefits are substantial. A complete charge for a typical MG4 electric car would cost approximately £16 at the discounted rate, which is more than half the expense of running a comparable petrol vehicle like the Volkswagen Golf. The petrol alternative costs around 17p per mile and £75 per tank, making the EV option considerably more economical.

Gurjeet Grewal, CEO of Octopus Electric Vehicles, emphasized the company's commitment to inclusivity: "We're making EV driving cheap for everyone, not just those with driveways. We've already helped thousands of drivers switch to electric but the landscape is changing fast, and more people without driveways are becoming EV-curious."

Addressing Historical Inequalities

Matt Davies, Founder and Director of Octopus Electroverse, highlighted how this initiative corrects a longstanding imbalance: "For too long, not having a driveway has meant paying more to go electric. That's never sat right with us. EVs are getting cheaper, technology is getting better, and now public charging is catching up, too."

The company specifically targets drivers who lease their electric vehicles through Octopus, offering them the pioneering 50% discount on kerbside charging. Motorists can access these reduced rates by charging through the Octopus Electroverse platform, which simplifies the charging process across multiple networks.

Future Expansion Plans

This announcement represents just the beginning of Octopus Energy's ambitious plans. The company is actively preparing to bring additional charging networks on board to expand the offer further. The door remains wide open for other charge point operators who wish to participate in this transformative initiative, potentially creating a more unified and affordable charging infrastructure nationwide.

Grewal added: "With the increased prevalence of affordable kerbside charging and cars, now's the perfect time to offer drivers a bundle designed for those who can't charge at home. By cutting kerbside charging costs in half, even more drivers can enjoy the savings and simplicity of going electric – and we're thrilled to help people from all corners of the UK join the EV revolution."
