UK Christmas Tree Shortage Warning: Shop Early for Quality Firs
UK Christmas tree shortage: Shop early for quality

British families are being urged to purchase their Christmas trees as soon as possible to avoid disappointment, with experts warning of a significant shortage of high-quality firs this festive season.

Why is there a Christmas tree shortage?

The supply issue stems from a combination of climate change and extreme weather conditions that have affected tree growers across Europe. Late frosts followed by summer heatwaves and extremely dry weather have stunted the growth of many trees, leading to gaps between branches.

Chris Bonnett, founder of Gardening Express, confirmed the problem, stating: "Late frosts combined with heatwaves and general climate change issues have stunted the growth of many trees from Europe, leaving growers with less quality trees to sell."

Furthermore, the British Christmas Tree Growers Association (BCTGA) highlighted that last year's exceptionally wet weather created additional complications, causing problems with nutrient uptake and root damage from waterlogged soil.

What does this mean for shoppers?

While trees will still be available for purchase, their appearance may be noticeably different. The popular "bushy" varieties like spruces and Nordmann firs may appear less full compared to previous years, according to reports from the BBC.

Deepak Tailor, founder of LatestFreeStuff.co.uk, advised that shoppers seeking "the best choice," particularly for larger or premium trees, should begin their search early. He cautioned that while there should still be "plenty available" for most people, some trees might not look as 'perfect' as in previous seasons.

Price increases and expert recommendations

Consumers should also prepare for higher costs. Growers are facing increased transport and labour expenses, which are inevitably being passed on to customers.

Chris Bonnett is now actively encouraging shoppers to "head out soon to pick your Christmas tree as soon as they hit the stores to avoid missing out." He emphasised that "prices are creeping up no matter where your tree is from and demand is outstripping supply."

For those who are flexible about size or tree type, good deals might still be found closer to Christmas. However, the consistent advice from all experts is clear: if you have specific requirements for your perfect Christmas tree, do not delay your purchase this year.
