UK Households Can Save £130 on Water Bills by Fixing Hidden Leaks
Fix hidden leaks to save £130 on water bills, UK urged

Households across the UK are being encouraged to take immediate action that could slash more than £130 from their annual water bills. The call comes as experts warn of potential pipe damage from freezing temperatures expected in January.

The Winter Leak Warning

With a cold snap forecast for next month, water companies are urging residents to prepare their homes to prevent costly and wasteful leaks. Tom Stoten, head of demand management for Affinity Water, highlighted the risks posed by unpredictable winter weather. "A cold snap can happen at any time, leading to frozen pipes and leaks around your home," he stated.

Stoten emphasised the importance of being proactive: "We’re encouraging everyone to get their homes ready for the winter period." The company is advising people to use its free leak detection service to ensure their property is protected.

How Billing Works and Who Can Save

The potential for savings is closely linked to how your water bill is calculated. If your property does not have a water meter, you are charged a fixed amount for water and sewage services based on your home's rateable value, regardless of usage.

However, if you have a water meter—which is mandatory for all properties built since 1990—you are charged for the actual volume of water you use. It is these metered households that stand to gain the most financially from locating and repairing hidden leaks.

According to data from Affinity Water's leak visits, households that address hidden leaks save an average of 247 litres of water every single day. This significant reduction in wasted water translates directly into lower charges, cutting annual bills by more than £130.

Simple Steps to Detect and Fix Leaks

Katy Towse, a local customer, shared advice passed down from her father, a former leakage technician. She advocates for a simple "look and listen" test to help detect leaks early. "I've always grown up appreciating how precious water is," she said, urging others to be more efficient with their usage.

The recommended course of action is straightforward: if you suspect a leak, you should book a free leak visit from your water company. "You can relax knowing your home is protected and water is flowing smoothly all winter long," added Tom Stoten.

Beyond individual savings, tackling leaks has a broader benefit for community water resources. Furthermore, water companies offer a variety of additional discount schemes for eligible customers, which can provide further financial relief.
