Work has officially begun on a new £12 million mental health facility in Erdington, Birmingham, which will provide 24 inpatient beds for adults. The facility, named the Erdington Wellbeing Centre, is expected to open in early 2025 and will be operated by Birmingham and Solihull Mental Health NHS Foundation Trust.
Details of the New Facility
The centre will offer a modern, therapeutic environment designed to support recovery for adults experiencing acute mental health crises. It will include private bedrooms, communal areas, and gardens. According to the trust, the facility aims to reduce the need for out-of-area placements, ensuring patients can receive care closer to their families and communities.
Community Impact
Local MP Jack Dromey welcomed the development, stating, "This new facility is a vital investment in mental health services for our community. It will provide high-quality care in a setting that promotes dignity and recovery." The trust’s chief executive, Dr. Patrick Geoghegan, added, "We are committed to delivering modern, accessible mental health services, and this centre will make a real difference to people in Birmingham."
Construction Timeline
The project is being delivered by Kier Group, with completion scheduled for early 2025. The construction phase is expected to create around 100 jobs, providing a boost to the local economy. The facility is part of a wider £30 million investment by the trust to improve mental health infrastructure across the region.
