Belong Chester Urges Carers to Seek Dementia Support This Awareness Week
Belong Chester Urges Dementia Carers to Seek Support

Belong Chester is encouraging people caring for loved ones with dementia to access local support services, as it marks Dementia Action Week and highlights the importance of community connection, social activity and expert guidance.

Engaging with community networks, staying socially active and seeking specialist advice are key to supporting families affected by dementia, says the City Road care village, as the national awareness campaign shines a spotlight on the challenges faced by unpaid carers. Around 1.8 million people in England provide unpaid care for someone living with dementia, with many dedicating the equivalent of four working days a week or more to caring responsibilities.

Caroline Ray, general manager at Belong Chester, said: “In our experience, there are many, many families in the community muddling through the complexities of supporting a loved one with dementia. It can feel incredibly isolating and lonely, but our message is that you don’t have to go at it alone. Advice and guidance are out there, even when a formal diagnosis is yet to be made, so this Dementia Action Week, be sure to explore the options and get in touch.”

Expanded Community Support

Belong Chester has expanded its community-focused support in recent years, with services designed to improve wellbeing and reduce isolation. Its monthly B’s Café offers a memory café environment with free coffee and conversation, giving carers a chance to take a break while their loved ones take part in engaging activities.

The sessions also provide access to Belong’s Admiral Nurses, in partnership with Dementia UK, offering specialist advice, support with assessments, social care guidance and financial signposting.

Activities and Structured Support

Alongside this, carers’ loved ones can join a wider programme of activities including arts and crafts, exercise classes, intergenerational sessions, entertainment and outings, available free or at low cost. More structured support is available through Belong’s Experience Days and Belong at Home Chester services, offering day care and home care options.

Caroline Ray added: “It’s important to us that everyone has that support network around them - it’s about caring for the carers. Even if it’s just popping in for a brew, help is on the doorstep.”
