Summer Dog Care Tips: Keep Your Canine Cool and Safe
Summer Dog Care: Keep Your Canine Cool and Safe

Summer is here, and it's time to think about our dogs. If your dog has a long coat, consider getting a trim to keep them fresh and comfortable during walks.

Preventing Overheating

Be careful that your dog does not overheat, which can be very dangerous. My dog Delph loves retrieving tennis balls and will keep going until she drops. I find places where she can swim to stay cool. If no water is available, I carry a bottle of water and stop retrieving when she starts panting.

Exercise and Feeding Tips

Feed your dog after exercise, not before. This keeps them more interested in you. Dogs prefer to exercise before eating, just like us. Overfeeding can make them less responsive to commands.

Protect Against Bugs and Sun

Watch out for itchy bugs and worms, which are common this time of year. Find shade for your daily walk, and consider carrying a sunshade or umbrella. I wear a white hat and light clothing to avoid sunstroke.

A Cautionary Tale

A few years ago, during a retriever group practice in the USA, one dog collapsed on dry land. A vet with a heat-repelling silver sheet was present, and the dog recovered fully at a local hospital. I trust Delph implicitly, but I stay in charge of her health because she would work until she drops.

Puppy Safety

Keep puppies close and safe. Do not let them run freely; they do not understand dangers like deep water. You must stay in control.

Never Leave Dogs in Cars

Never leave a dog in a car in summer. It is extremely dangerous. Some organizations now break into vehicles to rescue dogs in hot weather.
