Government Announces Financial Support Increase for Disabled Benefits Recipients
More than 150,000 individuals living with disabilities are set to receive a significant cash boost to help manage rising living costs. The Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) has confirmed that eligible claimants will see an increase of at least £400 in their financial support.
Minimum Income Guarantee Rise
The Department of Health and Social Care (DHSC) is implementing a 7 percent increase to the minimum income guarantee (MIG) for working-age adults who receive social care. This adjustment, effective from April, ensures that those arranging home care through local authorities can retain more of their income after care expenses.
For single persons of pension credit age, the weekly amount will rise from £232.60 to £241.45. Similarly, individuals aged 18-24 will see their allocation increase from £89.15 to £95.40 per week.
Enhanced Disability Premium
Additionally, the DHSC has announced that those qualifying for the disability premium—an extra provision for individuals with higher disability needs—will retain up to £510 more annually. This measure aims to provide substantial relief for those facing greater financial pressures due to their conditions.
Disabled Facilities Grant Funding
In a parallel initiative, the government has allocated £723 million for the Disabled Facilities Grant (DFG) for the 2026-2027 period. This grant assists older and disabled individuals in making necessary home adaptations to live safely and independently, reducing hospital admissions and enhancing quality of life.
The DFG supported approximately 60,000 people last year, and the new funding will be distributed regionally as follows:
- North East: £40,991,139
- North West: £124,356,177
- Yorkshire and the Humber: £69,779,658
- East Midlands: £51,658,126
- West Midlands: £89,602,528
- East of England: £66,019,956
- London: £95,935,564
- South East: £115,148,496
- South West: £69,508,356
The total allocation confirms the government's commitment to supporting vulnerable populations through targeted financial assistance and practical home adaptation programs.
