Walsall Fireworks Blaze: 55 Firefighters Battle Storage Unit Inferno
Major Walsall fire at storage unit full of fireworks

A dramatic and intense fire, fuelled by a large quantity of fireworks, tore through a commercial storage unit in Walsall on Thursday evening, prompting a massive emergency services response.

Major Incident on Pleck Road

Emergency services were called to the Manor Industrial Estate on Pleck Road at approximately 8.30 pm on Thursday, December 4. The blaze, which involved a unit storing fireworks, stock, and wooden pallets, quickly escalated, with large red flames visible across the area.

West Midlands Fire Service deployed a significant force to tackle the dangerous situation. A total of 55 firefighters worked through the night, using high-pressure water jets and a hydraulic aerial platform to combat the flames and subsequent explosions from the fireworks.

Firefighting Operation and Precautions

To secure a sufficient water supply for the considerable fire, crews utilised water from a nearby canal. The presence of explosive materials made the operation particularly hazardous.

As a necessary safety measure, West Midlands Police implemented a road closure on Pleck Road. Authorities strongly advised local residents to avoid the vicinity while firefighters worked to bring the situation under control.

Aftermath and Ongoing Investigation

Fortunately, the fire service confirmed that there were no casualties or injuries reported as a result of the incident. As of Friday morning, two fire engines remained at the scene to damp down any remaining hotspots.

A structural engineer is due to assess the damage to the building. Investigators from the fire service will be conducting inquiries into the cause of the blaze over the weekend and into the coming week.
