Trading Standards Issues Urgent Warning Over Illegal Skin-Lightening Products
The Chartered Trading Standards Institute (CTSI) has launched a major alert following a significant increase in the availability of illegal skin-lightening products across the United Kingdom. These dangerous items have been discovered for sale in various retail outlets, including specialist food shops, small grocery stores, butchers, and through numerous online platforms.
Dangerous Ingredients Found in Illegal Products
Investigations have revealed that many of these skin-lightening creams and lotions contain banned substances that pose severe health threats. The products have been found to include hydroquinone, mercury, and powerful corticosteroids, all of which are prohibited in cosmetics within the UK market.
Staffordshire County Council has emphasized the serious risks associated with these ingredients, which can lead to permanent skin damage, severe infections, and significant pregnancy-related complications. The council stated that while the impact is most pronounced among individuals from Black, Asian, and minority ethnic backgrounds, the safety advice applies universally to all consumers.
Growing Availability and Enforcement Actions
Anthony Screen, cabinet member for community safety and resilience at Staffordshire County Council, expressed deep concern over the increasing availability of these harmful products. He confirmed that Trading Standards officers possess clear powers to investigate, seize unsafe goods, remove them from sale, and prosecute those found selling illegal cosmetics.
Recent enforcement activity in London has uncovered a troubling pattern where illegal cosmetics are being sold alongside other high-risk goods, including unlicensed medicines and prohibited biocidal products. Furthermore, officers have identified a growing market for these creams on social media platforms, where influencers promote products directly to consumers without proper regulatory oversight.
Essential Safety Advice for Consumers
Trading Standards officers have issued crucial guidance to protect public health:
- Never purchase skin-lightening products from unverified sellers or social media accounts.
- Avoid buying cosmetics from online marketplaces without proper verification.
- Always consult with a doctor or dermatologist before using any product intended to alter skin tone.
- Never use these products on children under any circumstances.
The council emphasized that shops have a legal responsibility to ensure the products they sell are safe, properly labeled, and comply with all relevant laws. Where this does not happen, authorities will take necessary enforcement action.
Reporting Suspicious Products
Consumers who encounter suspicious cosmetic products or experience adverse reactions after using such items are urged to report them immediately. Reports can be made to Citizens Advice by calling 0808 223 1133 or through the Staffordshire County Council Trading Standards Report It webpage. This work forms part of the council's first-ever Community Safety Strategy, which aims to protect residents and create a county where everyone feels safe and supported.
