State Pensioners Born Before 1946 to Receive Extra £100
Pensioners Born Before 1946 Get Extra £100

State pensioners born before 1946 are set to receive an additional £100 as part of the Winter Fuel Payment scheme, the government has confirmed. The extra payment means those aged 80 and over will get £300 this winter, while younger pensioners under 80 will receive £200.

Why Older Pensioners Get More

The higher payment for over-80s—those born before 1946—reflects the fact that older individuals typically spend more time at home during the colder months, leading to increased heating usage. The Winter Fuel Payment is designed to help lower-income pensioners keep their homes warm throughout winter.

Payment Schedule and Eligibility

The cash boost usually arrives in bank accounts during November, just before Christmas. However, eligibility rules have changed in recent years. The winter fuel allowance is now means-tested, linked to income. Pensioners with an annual income below £35,000 will keep the full payment. Those above this threshold may initially receive the money but will have to repay it in monthly instalments to HMRC the following year.

The £35,000 threshold was introduced to ensure that wealthier pensioners, who can manage without the extra support, do not retain the benefit. Additionally, some low-income pensioners may qualify for the separate Warm Home Discount of £150.
