The NHS trust operating Russells Hall Hospital in Dudley is making significant strides towards achieving national waiting time targets, thanks to a government-backed initiative that has introduced high-speed surgical techniques and streamlined outpatient processes.

Government Intervention Drives Efficiency

Westminster dispatched specialist teams to twenty areas across England identified as having the highest levels of economic inactivity. This targeted effort, known as the Further Faster 20 initiative, aims to reduce patient waiting times and facilitate a quicker return to work for individuals.

Dudley was selected as one of the beneficiary areas under this programme. The intervention has led to the adoption of so-called 'Formula One' surgery, where doctors have accelerated operational procedures. Additionally, outpatient appointments have been optimised by directing patients straight to necessary tests, eliminating the need for multiple clinic visits.

Trust Leadership Reports Positive Outcomes

Diane Wake, the Group Chief Executive at Dudley Group NHS Foundation Trust, expressed pride in the trust's participation over the past eighteen months. "The Further Faster 20 initiative has enabled us to unlock new activity and apply innovative approaches to improve theatre flow and boost capacity," she stated.

Wake highlighted the tangible results: "There are currently no patients waiting 65 weeks or over, and only 0.1 percent of our patients are waiting over 52 weeks." She confirmed the trust is on course to meet the national target of ensuring 65 percent of patients wait no longer than 18 weeks for treatment by March 2026.

Expert Endorsement of the Approach

Tim Mitchell, President of the Royal College of Surgeons of England, welcomed the initiative's impact. "It is encouraging to see targeted support helping trusts run operating lists and outpatient clinics more efficiently," he remarked.

Mitchell emphasised the human cost of prolonged waits, including extended pain, loss of independence, and disruption to employment and daily life. He noted, "This initiative shows what's possible with focused investment. Our surgical workforce census indicates surgeons are prepared to perform more operations, and with adequate theatres, staffing, and bed capacity, the NHS can accelerate efforts to tackle waiting lists."
