This March, a dedicated deputy headteacher is preparing to embark on an extraordinary physical and mental journey to highlight a critical issue affecting young people across the nation: mental health and wellbeing. Liam Collins, who serves as deputy headteacher at Captains Close Primary School in Ashfordby, will push his limits over three consecutive days from Wednesday, March 25 to Friday, March 27.
A Gruelling Challenge for a Vital Cause
The scale of Liam's undertaking is truly immense. He plans to run a demanding route that connects every single school within the Discovery Schools Academy Trust. Each day, he will cover a distance equivalent to an ultramarathon, culminating in three ultramarathons completed within a mere 72-hour window. This formidable test of endurance is not just about the miles; it's about making a meaningful impact.
Route and Schedule Details
The journey will commence at Uppingham Community College on Wednesday morning at 9am, with a scheduled triumphant conclusion at Birch Wood Special School on Friday afternoon at 3pm. Throughout the event, Liam will maintain a rigorous pace, aiming to visit six different schools each day. At every stop, his mission extends far beyond a simple visit.
Fostering Conversations and Community
Liam's primary objective is to ignite essential conversations about mental health within school environments. At each school, he will engage in specific activities designed to promote openness and support:
- Joining children for laps around their playgrounds to combine physical activity with dialogue.
- Advocating for honesty and proactivity regarding mental wellbeing among pupils.
- Building a supportive community that bridges the gap between physical fitness and mental health awareness.
Liam expressed his motivation clearly: "I want to build a community and raise awareness and funds for Young Minds." He is undertaking this remarkable feat to raise essential funds for YoungMinds, a charity dedicated to fighting for a future where all young minds are supported and empowered, regardless of the challenges they face.
