A GP has shared the freezer staples she always keeps stocked to help support healthy ageing, emphasizing that this simple habit could make a bigger difference than people think. With busy routines and rising food costs, maintaining a healthy diet can be challenging. However, experts say your freezer could be one of the easiest ways to stay on track, helping you eat well without the stress or expense of constantly buying fresh food.

The Frozen Food Advantage

Dr Asiya Maula, a private GP at The Health Suite, explained that many foods linked to long-term health are perfectly suited to freezing. She stated: "People often assume fresh is always best, but frozen foods can be incredibly nutritious and are a great way to make healthy choices more convenient. Many frozen fruits and vegetables are picked and frozen very quickly, helping to preserve nutrients."

Top Freezer Staples

Berries are at the top of Dr Maula's list for good reason. "Berries contain fibre and beneficial plant compounds called polyphenols, which have been linked to a range of health benefits," she said. "They're easy to add to porridge, yoghurt or smoothies, and frozen berries are often much more affordable than fresh."

Spinach is another essential. Leafy greens are a key part of many healthy diets, but they can quickly spoil in the fridge. Frozen spinach offers a simple solution. Dr Maula noted: "Spinach contains vitamins, minerals and antioxidants, and frozen spinach is incredibly versatile. It can be added to soups, stews, curries, pasta sauces or omelettes without much preparation."

Edamame beans provide a quick protein boost. "Edamame provides plant protein and fibre, which can help support satiety and overall health," she said. "They're an easy addition to salads, stir-fries or grain bowls."

Mixed vegetables are often overlooked but can be one of the most practical items to keep in your freezer. "One of the biggest barriers to healthy eating is convenience. Having vegetables already prepared and ready to cook makes it much easier to include them in meals," she explained. Dr Maula added that variety is key when it comes to supporting overall health and gut diversity.

Fish, particularly oily fish like salmon, is another freezer essential. "Fish provides high-quality protein and important nutrients, including omega-3 fatty acids. Keeping frozen portions available can make it easier to include fish in your diet regularly," Dr Maula said.

Consistency Over Perfection

According to Dr Maula, healthy ageing is less about perfection and more about consistency. "The healthiest diets are usually the ones people can stick to long term," she said. "Having nutritious foods available in the freezer means you're less reliant on takeaways, ultra-processed convenience foods or whatever happens to be in the cupboard." She added that there is no single 'superfood' behind a long, healthy life. "People often look for one magic ingredient, but long-term health is usually built through small habits repeated consistently over many years. A well-stocked freezer can be a surprisingly effective part of that."
