A beloved Birmingham security guard tragically lost his life to meningitis after initially dismissing his symptoms as a simple case of sleeping awkwardly.
A Sudden and Devastating Illness
David Monteiro, a 39-year-old doorman from Digbeth, passed away suddenly in the week before Christmas. Described by his heartbroken family as a 'loving, kind and generous soul', David was a social butterfly who had been planning a large party to celebrate his upcoming 40th birthday on New Year's Day.
His youngest sister, Rachel Monteiro, revealed that David believed his early symptoms – a bad back and a stiff neck – were merely the result of an uncomfortable night's sleep. "None of us understood the severity of what was happening to him — not even David himself," she said.
Rapid Deterioration and Hospitalisation
The situation escalated alarmingly fast. David very suddenly developed a swelling on the brain and suffered a seizure. He was rushed to Heartlands Hospital, where doctors placed him in an induced coma in a desperate attempt to save his life.
"Within just a few days, this cruel illness took his life," Rachel added. The family are now sharing his story in the hope that it will help others recognise the signs of meningitis sooner and potentially save lives.
Family's Fundraising and Awareness Campaign
Facing the unexpected financial burden of funeral costs, David's family have set up a GoFundMe page with a target of £5,500. By December 22, the fundraiser had gathered £3,000 in donations. The family intend to use any excess funds to support the intensive care unit at Heartlands Hospital and a meningitis charity.
Paying tribute, Rachel said: "He would have gone out of his way to help when he could…David was a people person. His smile, warmth, and humour made the world a brighter place." The family are asking for support, no matter how small, to help give David a dignified farewell.
