The Crown Prosecution Service (CPS) has confirmed that convicted killer nurse Lucy Letby will not face any further criminal charges following a detailed review of additional allegations. Prosecutors stated that the evidential test required for prosecution was not met in any of the new cases under consideration.
Comprehensive Review of Alleged Incidents
Cheshire Police submitted a substantial file of evidence to the CPS in July 2025, requesting consideration of further allegations against Letby. These allegations involved incidents at both the Countess of Chester Hospital and Liverpool Women's Hospital, spanning a period that included Letby's training and early career stages dating back to 2012.
The specific allegations reviewed by prosecutors included potential murder charges relating to two infants who died and attempted murder charges concerning seven infants who survived medical incidents. Following what the CPS described as a thorough and independent examination of all submitted material, the decision was made not to proceed with any additional prosecutions.
Official Statement from CPS Leadership
Frank Ferguson, Head of the CPS Special Crime and Counter Terrorism Division, provided detailed clarification regarding the decision-making process. "We received a comprehensive file of evidence from Cheshire Constabulary asking us to consider further allegations against Lucy Letby," Ferguson explained. "After conducting a meticulous review of that evidence, we have determined that no criminal charges should be brought in respect of those additional allegations."
Ferguson emphasised the independence of the decision-making process, stating: "This conclusion was reached independently, based strictly on the available evidence and in accordance with our established legal test. The evidential threshold required for prosecution was not satisfied in any of these particular cases."
Communication with Affected Families
The CPS has taken specific steps to communicate directly with the families involved in these latest allegations. Official correspondence has been sent to all affected families, with offers of personal meetings to provide more detailed explanations of the decision-making process and the legal reasoning behind it.
"Our thoughts remain with the families throughout this difficult process," Ferguson added, acknowledging the emotional impact of such decisions on those directly affected by the allegations and investigations.
Background Context and Previous Convictions
Lucy Letby, now 35 years old, is currently serving fifteen whole-life orders for crimes committed during her tenure as a neonatal nurse at the Countess of Chester Hospital between 2015 and 2016. Her existing convictions include seven murders of newborn babies and seven attempted murders, with one infant having been targeted twice according to court records.
The initial police investigation into Letby's activities, codenamed Operation Hummingbird, was launched after hospital management contacted authorities in May 2017 regarding unexplained increases in serious incidents within the neonatal unit. This original investigation led to the successful prosecution and conviction that resulted in Letby's current imprisonment.
The latest decision by prosecutors brings closure to this additional phase of investigation while maintaining that all available evidence has been thoroughly examined according to established legal standards and procedures.
