Thunderstorm Timings and Affected Areas
The Met Office has issued a yellow weather warning for thunderstorms across parts of the UK, with exact times predicted for Monday. The warning covers central and southern England, including Birmingham, from 10am to 8pm. Thunderstorms are expected to develop from late morning, bringing heavy rain, lightning, and possible hail.
According to the Met Office, the storms will be most intense between 1pm and 5pm, with a risk of flooding and travel disruption. Areas such as the West Midlands, London, and the South East are likely to be affected.
Soaring Temperatures Ahead
Despite the unsettled start to the week, temperatures are set to rise sharply from Tuesday onwards. By Wednesday and Thursday, many parts of the UK could see highs of 30°C (86°F), particularly in the South East. The Met Office meteorologist Alex Deakin said, "After the thunderstorms, we'll see a build of heat from the south, with temperatures climbing well above average for this time of year."
This heatwave is expected to last into the weekend, with dry and sunny conditions dominating. However, the sudden shift from thunderstorms to heat may pose health risks, especially for vulnerable groups.
Impact on Travel and Daily Life
The thunderstorms could cause flooding on roads and railways, leading to delays and cancellations. The Met Office advises drivers to be cautious and avoid flooded areas. Local authorities in Birmingham are monitoring the situation and have urged residents to secure loose items in gardens due to potential strong winds.
Power cuts are also possible, and people are advised to charge devices and have torches ready. The combination of heavy rain and lightning may disrupt outdoor events and activities.
Preparation Tips
Residents are encouraged to stay updated via the Met Office website or app. Emergency services recommend staying indoors during the worst of the storms and not driving through floodwater. With the subsequent heatwave, it's important to stay hydrated and keep cool.
