Family and friends of Katie Fox, a 34-year-old woman fatally stabbed at a Birmingham bus stop, gathered for a special memorial service in Bournville on Friday, May 1. The service at St Francis Church was an emotional tribute to a woman described as "kind," "beautiful," and "a beautiful and caring soul."
Heartfelt Tributes from Loved Ones
Katie's mother, Maria Fox, spoke movingly about her daughter, saying she "touched the hearts" of many with her kindness and respectfulness. "Katie was a beautiful and caring soul," Maria said. "She was passionate about all that was good in life. Katie had a soft and beautiful smile. The loss of our most dearest and precious daughter will never fade."
The memorial service came two months after Katie was laid to rest in Devon, a place she loved and had planned to move to before the attack. She was stabbed while waiting for a bus on Smallbrook Queensway in Birmingham city center last November.
Music and Fundraising
Katie's partner, Gary, performed at the service with his band ADHD, providing beautiful music. The service also raised over £200 for Cats Protection, Katie's favorite charity. Maria thanked Gary and Katie's friends for organizing the touching event.
"The service provided an opportunity for family and friends to speak personally about the love they have for Katie. It was very moving," Maria said. "It concluded with the lighting of candles by all visitors which were placed next to Katie photos."
Community Support
Maria also expressed gratitude for the support from her sister Brenda, who has been her "rock" throughout this difficult time. She added, "Following our visit to Katie's resting place in Devon, it was a most pleasant to see many friends and family attend her memorial service. The memorial shined through with reflection of the such good that Katie was."
Djeison Rafael, 21, of no fixed address, has been charged with Katie's murder and other offenses. His trial has been refixed for October 6 after a previous date was deemed unworkable.
