DWP Confirms £100-£300 Winter Fuel Payments for Millions

The Department for Work and Pensions has announced the return of bonus payments ranging from £100 to £300 for retirees. Most individuals do not need to submit a claim for a Winter Fuel Payment from the DWP.

Payments are typically made automatically to those receiving certain benefits, including Pension Credit, Universal Credit, or State Pension. According to Turn2Us, a Winter Fuel Payment is a one-off, tax-free payment issued during winter to assist with heating costs. It is provided to households that include someone over State Pension age.

If your annual income exceeds £35,000, you will be required to repay the full Winter Fuel Payment amount. This recovery will be handled by HMRC after the payment has been made. Most payments will be processed automatically in November and December 2026.

The payment amount ranges from £100 to £300, depending on individual circumstances such as age or whether you live with other eligible individuals. A Winter Fuel Payment does not count as income when determining eligibility for other benefits.

You can opt out of receiving a Winter Fuel Payment by completing an opt-out form before 11:59pm on 20 September 2026. Alternatively, you can opt out by calling the Winter Fuel Payment Centre before 6pm on 18 September 2026. If you wish to opt back in after opting out, contact the Winter Fuel Payment Centre before 31 March 2027.

Some people may prefer to receive the payment to cover extra winter costs, the charity adds. You will not be eligible for a Winter Fuel Payment if your annual income exceeds £35,000. HMRC will recover the amount by adjusting your tax code in the 2027/2028 tax year. If you submit a Self-Assessment tax return, the amount will be added to the 2026/2027 tax year.
