DWP Accelerates Attendance Allowance Claims, Pensioners to Receive £218 Annual Increase
The Department for Work and Pensions has announced significant measures to expedite and streamline the processing of new Attendance Allowance claims, providing a much-needed boost for state pensioners with health issues. This initiative aims to enhance efficiency and ensure timely support for older individuals, particularly those undergoing medical treatment.
Faster Processing Targets
Labour Party Pensions Minister Torsten Bell has revealed that the DWP is working towards a target of clearing 90% of all new Attendance Allowance applications within 30 days. Currently, most claims are being processed within approximately three to four weeks, a timeline that has been bolstered by the increasing adoption of the new digital application route.
Mr Bell emphasized, "The Department keeps Attendance Allowance processing times under review and recognises the importance of timely decisions for older people, including those undergoing significant medical treatment." He added that through the wider Service Modernisation programme, steps have been taken to speed up and streamline the processing of new claims.
Enhanced Support for End-of-Life Cases
For customers nearing the end of life, the DWP operates a dedicated fast-track process under the Special Rules for End of Life. In these cases, claims are prioritized and typically cleared within eight days. The extension of the end-of-life definition from six months to twelve months ensures that more people with advanced conditions can benefit from this expedited process, providing crucial financial assistance during difficult times.
Attendance Allowance Payment Rates
The Attendance Allowance is paid at two different rates, depending on the level of care required:
- Lower Rate: Currently £73.90 per week, awarded to those who need frequent help or constant supervision during the day or at night.
- Higher Rate: Currently £110.40 per week, given to those who need help or supervision throughout the day and night, or if a medical professional has stated they are nearing the end of life.
April Payment Increases
The DWP has confirmed that both the lower and higher Attendance Allowance rates will rise from April, resulting in an annual boost for claimants. Under the current rates, pensioners on the lower rate can receive up to £3,842.80 per year, while those on the higher rate can get up to £5,740.80 per year.
From April, the changes will be as follows:
- Lower Rate Increase: Rising from £73.90 per week to £76.70, giving claimants up to £3,988.40 annually—a boost of £145.60 extra per year.
- Higher Rate Increase: Payments will rise from £110.40 per week to £114.60, amounting to £5,959.20 per year—a significant boost of £218.40 extra annually.
These increases are part of the DWP's ongoing efforts to support pensioners with health-related needs, ensuring they receive adequate financial assistance in a timely manner. The combination of faster processing and higher payments is expected to make a substantial difference in the lives of many older individuals across the country.
