Hyndburn Honours 16 Community Champions with Civic Titles

Sixteen of Hyndburn's most dedicated community champions have been officially recognised for their lifetime of service to the borough. The local legends were presented with the prestigious titles of Honorary Alderman and Freeman of the Borough during the emotional 2026 Mayor Making ceremony recently. In one of his first official acts, the newly appointed Mayor of Hyndburn, Cllr Noordad Aziz, bestowed the rare civic honours upon the 16 individuals in front of proud family, friends, and colleagues.

Freeman of the Borough Recipients

Those awarded the Freeman of the Borough include Judith Addison, Pam Barton, Anne Ellwood, Saeeda Farooq, Barbara Fielding, Marlene Haworth, Gwen Mayor, Dave Parkins, Tracy Simmonds and Mohammed Yaseen. The title is awarded to those deemed as being persons of distinction, or persons who have, in the opinion of the authority, rendered eminent services to the area. Three of the awards were given posthumously, with family members of friends accepting the honour on behalf of Pam Barton, Marlene Haworth and Gwen Mayor.

Honorary Alderman Honours

At the same ceremony, the title of Honorary Alderman was conferred on Josh Allen, Bernard Dawson MBE, June Harrison, Susan Haworth, Joyce Plummer and Dorothy Westell, all having lengthy and distinguished former service with the Council and/or holding a particular qualifying office, thereby having rendered eminent services to the Council as past members of the Council.

Mayor's Remarks

The Mayor of Hyndburn, Councillor Noordad Aziz said: “Being awarded the title of Alderman or Freeman is a rare and distinguished honour, recognising many years of exceptional service and dedication to the community. It signifies not only personal commitment, but also the high regard in which these individuals are held by fellow members and local residents. Steeped in history and civic pride, this distinction is not given lightly. I was delighted to present these honours today to 16 individuals whose contributions truly merit this recognition.”

Councillor Munsif Dad BEM JP, Leader of the Council said: “Congratulations to our new Aldermen and Freemen of the Borough. Each has given their time and energy to improving Hyndburn, and it is only right this dedication is recognised. Their commitment to public service and support for local communities speaks volumes. On behalf of the Council, I thank them all and hope this honour reflects the value of their contributions.”
