DWP Announces Streamlined Processing for Attendance Allowance Claims
The Department for Work and Pensions has unveiled new initiatives designed to accelerate and simplify the handling of fresh Attendance Allowance applications. This effort forms a crucial component of the department's comprehensive Service Modernisation programme.
Minister Sets Clear 30-Day Target for Majority of Claims
Labour Party Pensions Minister Torsten Bell has articulated a definitive objective: to finalize 90 percent of all new Attendance Allowance claims within a 30-day timeframe. Bell confirmed that current performance indicates most applications are already being processed in approximately three to four weeks.
"The Department keeps Attendance Allowance processing times under review and recognises the importance of timely decisions for older people, including those undergoing significant medical treatment," stated Minister Bell.
Digital Applications Drive Efficiency Gains
This improved processing speed is largely attributed to the growing adoption of a new digital application pathway. The shift towards online submissions is supporting the department's efficiency goals.
"Through our wider Service Modernisation programme, we have taken steps to speed up and streamline the processing of new Attendance Allowance claims," Bell explained. "We are now working to a target of clearing 90 per cent of new claims within 30 days, and current performance shows that the majority of claims are being cleared within around 3-4 weeks, supported by increasing uptake of the new digital application route."
Response to Parliamentary Inquiry on Waiting Times
The minister's comments were delivered in response to a formal question submitted by Labour MP Nadia Whittome. Whittome had requested an assessment of how current waiting periods might impact claimants, with particular concern for individuals undergoing active cancer treatments like chemotherapy.
As of August 2025, official statistics reveal that more than 1.7 million pensioners across Great Britain are in receipt of Attendance Allowance, underscoring the benefit's significant reach.
Fast-Track Process for End-of-Life Cases
For the most urgent cases, the DWP operates a dedicated priority system. Under the Special Rules for End of Life, claims are fast-tracked and typically resolved within eight days.
"For customers who are nearing the end of life, we operate a dedicated fast-track process under the Special Rules for End of Life, where claims are prioritised and typically cleared within eight days," Bell added.
A recent policy extension has broadened the definition of end of life from six months to twelve months. This change ensures a greater number of people with advanced, progressive conditions can access this expedited service.
The department's combined focus on digital modernization, clear performance targets, and specialized support for vulnerable claimants aims to enhance the overall experience for the substantial pensioner population relying on this vital financial support.
