Former High-Profile Dudley Councillor Rejoins Conservative Party, Commending Its Humility
In a significant political development, Shaz Saleem, a former Conservative councillor and well-known community activist in Dudley, has announced his return to the Tory party. Saleem, who previously served as cabinet member for highways and public realm, praised the Conservatives for their humility and commitment to listening to residents.
A Tumultuous Political Journey
Saleem was elected as a Conservative councillor for the Kingswinford and Wall Heath ward in 2021, quickly rising to a cabinet position. However, in February 2023, he was suspended from the party and left his post, continuing as an independent councillor. During this period, he faced legal challenges, including an arrest on suspicion of sexual assault, which he described as politically motivated, and no further police action was taken after an investigation.
He later stood trial in March 2025 for charges related to sending offensive messages, but was found not guilty, with the District Judge criticizing the quality of the evidence. Saleem has since emphasized moving forward, focusing on community support and charity work.
Saleem's Reasons for Returning
Speaking about his decision to rejoin the Conservatives, Saleem highlighted key local issues that matter to him. "What matters most to me is representing a party that puts people first and has the community at its heart," he said. "The green belt and parking are hugely important to me as I campaigned strongly for both. The vision for the ice rink is getting closer, which will boost revenue for our town, and recent investment into potholes is another big one."
He added, "Leadership is about making tough calls—and having the humility to listen and act when people speak. That's exactly what we've seen." Saleem, who originally defected from Labour to the Conservatives in 2017, has had a mixed electoral record as an independent, coming fourth in the 2024 Dudley Council elections and last in the Kingswinford and South Staffordshire constituency in the last general election.
Future Plans and Party Support
While Saleem stated he does not plan to stand in the 2026 election, he will actively support other Conservative candidates. Cllr Patrick Harley, leader of Dudley's Conservatives, welcomed his return, saying, "Shaz is renowned as a prolific community campaigner. His help in the local election campaign will be much appreciated. I look forward to working alongside him once again."
This move marks a fresh chapter in Saleem's political life, as he seeks to contribute to the party's efforts in addressing community concerns and fostering local development.
