HMRC Urges Parents Earning Under £80,000 to Claim Child Benefit Perk

The UK's tax authority, HMRC, is actively encouraging parents and carers across the nation to ensure they are not missing out on valuable financial support. Under the current Labour Party government, HMRC has issued a clear message: "make sure you're not missing out on money." This campaign specifically targets individuals with annual earnings below £80,000, highlighting the availability of Child Benefit payments.

What is Child Benefit and Who Qualifies?

Child Benefit is a government payment designed to assist with the costs of raising children. It provides financial support for each child under the age of 16, or up to 20 if they remain in full-time education or approved training. Claiming this benefit not only offers immediate cash assistance but also helps build National Insurance credits, which are crucial for qualifying for the State Pension in the future.

Currently, the benefit pays £26.05 per week for the first child, amounting to £1,354.60 annually. For each additional child, recipients receive £17.25 weekly. This means:

  • Families with two children receive approximately £2,275 per year.
  • Families with three children get around £3,172 annually.

Income Thresholds and the High Income Child Benefit Charge

Since April 2024, the upper earnings limit for receiving any Child Benefit has been set at £80,000 per year. However, individuals earning above £60,000 annually may be subject to the High Income Child Benefit Charge, which requires them to repay a portion of the benefit through the tax system. HMRC emphasizes that those earning £60,000 or less are eligible to claim the full amount, provided the child lives with them or they contribute an equivalent weekly amount towards the child's care.

On social media platforms like X, HMRC has been proactive in reminding people to check their eligibility. One post states: "Think you earn too much to receive Child Benefit payments? Check again to make sure you're not missing out on money. To see what you could get, use our Child Benefit tax calculator below, before restarting payments online or in the HMRC app."

Upcoming Increases and How to Claim

Child Benefit rates are set to increase by 3.8% in April 2026. From the new financial year, the weekly rates will rise to:

  1. £27.05 for the eldest or only child.
  2. £17.90 for any additional children.

This adjustment will boost the annual value to £1,406.60 for one child, £2,337.40 for two children, and £3,268.20 for three children. Parents can claim Child Benefit just 48 hours after registering their child's birth or once a child comes to live with them, with the option to backdate claims for up to three months.

It is important to note that only one parent or carer can claim Child Benefit per child, so families should coordinate to maximize their entitlements. With these updates and reminders, HMRC aims to ensure that all eligible families take advantage of this financial perk, supporting household budgets across the UK.
