MP Lisa Smart Commits to Armed Forces Parliamentary Scheme
In recognition of International Women's Day this week, Lisa Smart MP has announced her participation in the Armed Forces Parliamentary Scheme, a program designed to provide parliamentary volunteers with basic military training and firsthand exposure to frontline personnel. This initiative coincides with a Royal British Legion campaign celebrating women in the Armed Forces and their crucial role in safeguarding national security.
Women's Representation in the Armed Forces
Recent statistics reveal significant female involvement in the UK's military community. Approximately 16,300 women serve in the UK Regular Armed Forces, with an additional 5,080 in the Reserve Forces. According to the latest census, there are 272,013 female veterans in England, Wales, and Scotland. The Royal British Legion estimates that 1.9 million members of the broader UK Armed Forces community, including families and the bereaved, are female.
In the Hazel Grove constituency, where Lisa Smart serves, the census recorded 341 women veterans, a figure higher than the national average. This local demographic has motivated Smart to deepen her understanding of military affairs through the parliamentary scheme.
Personal and Political Motivations
Lisa Smart's decision is influenced by both personal and political factors. She notes that the Liberal Democrat group in Parliament already includes a high proportion of ex-services MPs, and her own family history includes a grandfather and uncle who served as infantrymen in the army. With global threats to safety and stability on the rise, Smart emphasizes the importance of informed decision-making.
"It is entirely possible that I will be asked to vote on whether to send our armed forces into battle," she stated. "It did not feel right to do so without learning more about the people who are prepared to put themselves into that position for us."
Hands-On Experience and Training
The Armed Forces Parliamentary Scheme has provided Smart with immersive experiences, including field training exercises and visits to military bases in Europe, such as Estonia. She has engaged with a diverse range of personnel, from officer cadets at Sandhurst to junior soldiers from Harrogate, as well as senior, experienced leaders.
This exposure has allowed her to witness the kit and capabilities of the forces up close, fostering a deeper appreciation for their dedication and duty. Smart describes these interactions as a privilege, highlighting the remarkable men and women serving in the army.
Addressing Community Divisions
In light of the real threat of conflict, which she warns is often exploited to divide communities, Smart is determined to promote unity. She pledges to continue learning from and with the brave individuals who defend the nation, with a special focus on the incredible women in the Armed Forces, especially in the context of International Women's Day.
"The threat of conflict is unfortunately one that is very real," she remarked. "I am determined that it should not be used to divide our communities, and I will continue to support those who protect us."
