UK Passport Fees Set to Rise by 8% from April 8, 2026

The Home Office has unveiled a proposal for an 8 per cent increase in UK passport fees, scheduled to take effect from Wednesday, 8 April 2026. This significant hike could see adult passport costs exceed £100 for the first time, with children's and pensioners' fees also set to climb. The changes are pending parliamentary approval, marking a notable shift in travel expenses for Britons.

Proposed Fee Increases Across All Categories

Under the new proposal, standard online applications for adult passports could rise from £94.50 to £102, while postal applications may jump from £107 to £115.50. For children, online passport fees could increase from £61.50 to £66.50, with postal applications potentially going up from £74 to £80. These adjustments reflect the Home Office's aim to move towards a cost-recovery system, reducing reliance on general taxation.

The government emphasises that no profit is made from passport applications; fees contribute to processing costs, consular support overseas for lost or stolen passports, and border processing for British citizens. A Home Office statement clarified, "The new fees will help the Home Office to continue to move towards a system that meets its costs through those who use it, reducing reliance on funding from general taxation."

Special Considerations for Pensioners and Overseas Applications

Pensioners born on or before 2 September 1929 who hold British nationality remain eligible for a free 32-page concessionary passport. However, delivery charges for returning the passport or supporting documents may still apply. The government notes that customers who naturalised or registered as British nationals qualify regardless of when they did so.

For those applying overseas, online adult passport fees could rise from £108 to £116.50, with children's fees increasing from £70 to £75.50. Paper applications overseas may see adult costs go from £120.50 to £130 and children's from £82.50 to £89. These increases align with the broader trend of rising administrative costs.

Next-Day Services and Historical Context

The next-day premium service in the UK, while advisable for urgent needs, could see its fee rise from £222 to £239.50 from 8 April. This service remains a critical option for travellers requiring swift passport renewals, though early application is always recommended to avoid delays.

This proposed increase follows a 7 per cent hike on 10 April 2025, when adult passports rose from £88.50 to £94.50 and children's online applications from £57.50 to £61.50. Prior increases occurred in April 2024 and February 2023, with the 2023 hike marking the first rise in five years. The government advises submitting applications well in advance, as renewal processes can take up to three weeks in the UK or longer during peak travel periods.

For further details or to apply for a new or replacement UK passport, individuals are encouraged to visit the official government website. This fee adjustment underscores the ongoing efforts to balance public service costs with user funding, impacting millions of travellers across the nation.
