Halifax, a major bank brand with a 173-year history, will disappear from UK high streets as Lloyds Banking Group moves all customers to the Lloyds brand. The transition, set to begin in early 2027, will see Halifax signs removed from 190 branches across the country, affecting thousands of customers.
What the Change Means for Customers
Lloyds Banking Group will stop opening new accounts under the Halifax brand and will shift existing accounts to Lloyds branding over the coming days. According to Jas Singh, Lloyds’ consumer relations boss, customers will retain their current account numbers, sort codes, app design, and branch staff. “As Halifax changes to Lloyds, our Halifax customers will keep everything they know and love today – the same fantastic app design, the same friendly faces in our branches – even the same sort code and account number,” Singh said. He added that customers will gain access to Lloyds’ premium offerings like Club Lloyds, Lloyds Premier, Lloyds Ultra, and Lloyds Rewards.
No Job Losses or Branch Closures
Bosses have confirmed that there will be no job losses or branch closures as part of the announcement. Staff working in Halifax-branded branches are expected to keep their roles as those sites are rebranded to Lloyds over time. Where a Halifax branch is close to an existing Lloyds branch, customers will be served by the nearby Lloyds branch.
History of Halifax
Halifax was founded in 1853 as a building society in West Yorkshire. It demutualised and floated on the stock market in 1997, then merged with Bank of Scotland in 2001 to form HBOS. Lloyds Banking Group acquired HBOS in 2009 during the financial crisis. Lloyds says it remains “committed to its role in the town of Halifax, and the wider Yorkshire and Humber region.”
Timeline of Rebranding
Throughout 2027, Halifax branches will either rebrand to Lloyds or, where another branch is nearby, customers will be directed to an existing Lloyds branch. The move is part of Lloyds’ strategy to streamline its brand portfolio and invest in innovation for its customers.
