HMRC Issues Two-Week Warning on Tax Repayment Delays
HMRC Two-Week Warning on Tax Repayment Delays

HMRC has issued a warning to UK households that tax refunds may take up to two weeks to appear in bank accounts after being marked as 'repayment issued'. The tax authority clarified the timeframe in response to a taxpayer query about a delayed payment.

Understanding the Two-Week Delay

A taxpayer contacted HMRC after their tax return indicated a repayment was due. Their record showed the repayment had been issued since April 23, and they asked when the funds would arrive. HMRC responded: 'It can take up to two weeks from the date it shows as 'repayment issued'.'

Taxpayers may be owed a refund if they have overpaid tax due to incorrect tax codes, unreported changes in income or circumstances, or overpaid tax on pensions.

How to Track Your Refund

HMRC provides an online tool on the Government website to check when a refund should arrive. This tool can be used for queries related to:

  • National Insurance
  • Child Benefit
  • Construction Industry Scheme (CIS)
  • Corporation Tax
  • Employers' PAYE
  • Income Tax
  • Public services pensions remedy
  • Self Assessment (including Unique Taxpayer References)
  • Tax credits
  • VAT

Another tool is available on gov.uk to find the best way to claim a refund if you are due one.

Automatic Adjustments for Self Assessment

If you are registered for self assessment and HMRC identifies you are owed funds, the group will automatically adjust your bill to reflect this.

If You Are Not Self-Assessed

If you are employed or receive a pension and do not use self assessment, HMRC may write to you if you are due a refund. You will receive either a tax calculation letter (P800) or a simple assessment letter, which explains how to claim the amount owed.

For further assistance, taxpayers can use the HMRC app or contact the tax office directly.
