May 2026 will see a series of financial and legislative changes affecting millions of UK households, from Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) benefit payments to new renters' rights and HMRC penalties. Here is a breakdown of all 13 key updates.
DWP Benefits – May 1 and May 22
Due to two bank holidays (May 4 and May 25), benefit payments scheduled for those dates will be paid early. Those due on May 4 will receive funds on May 1, and those due on May 25 will be paid on May 22. This applies to Universal Credit, Personal Independence Payment (PIP), Disability Living Allowance, and state pension. Recipients should budget carefully as the next payment date remains unchanged.
HMRC Benefits – May 1 and May 22
Child Benefit payments from HMRC, typically paid every four weeks, will also be adjusted for bank holidays. If a payment is due on a bank holiday, it will be made on the previous working day.
State Pension – May 1 and May 22
State pension payment dates depend on National Insurance number endings. From April 6, 2026, the full state pension rose to £241.30 per week (basic £184.90), a 4.8% increase under the triple lock. Early payments apply for bank holidays.
Octopus Energy Tariff Hike – May 1
Intelligent Octopus Go and Octopus Go customers will see increased energy prices from May 1. These tariffs offer cheap overnight electricity for EV charging and home appliances.
Renters' Rights Bill – May 1
New rules in England limit rent increases to once per year, with at least two months' notice. Tenancy clauses allowing other rent increases will no longer apply. Landlords are advised to prepare.
£10 HMRC Penalties – May 1
For late tax returns filed after January 31, 2026, a £100 automatic penalty applies. From May 1, an additional £10 per day penalty kicks in for returns three months late. Interest and further penalties may also apply.
Inflation Update – May 20
UK inflation rose to 3.3% in March, driven by fuel costs from the Iran conflict. The next inflation data release is on May 20.
Nationwide £100 Bonus – May 21
Nationwide Building Society may announce its Fairer Share scheme on May 21, potentially giving eligible customers a £100 cash boost, depending on financial performance.
Ofgem Price Cap Announcement – May 27
Ofgem will announce the energy price cap for July-September 2026 by May 27. Over 22 million households on standard variable tariffs will be affected, though the cap limits per-unit charges, not total bills.
P60 Deadline – May 31
Employers must provide P60 forms to all employees on payroll as of April 5, 2026, by May 31. The P60 summarizes total pay and deductions for the tax year.
