Lichfield District Council Considers Proposal for First Pet Crematorium in the Region
Plans have been formally submitted to Lichfield District Council for a new pet cremation service, which would be established at the Britannia Enterprise Park. This facility, if approved, would represent the first dedicated pet crematorium in the local area, addressing a previously unmet need for such services.
Conversion of Former Veterinary Clinic
The proposal involves converting a current veterinary clinic into a fully operational pet cremation facility. According to the planning documents, the business anticipates handling between four to six pets per day initially, with the potential to increase this number to as many as 15 daily cremations as demand grows.
Support from Local Business Community
The plans have received positive feedback from Michelle Severn at Chrome Butterflies Pole and Aerial Studios, which operates above the proposed development. In a letter submitted with the application, Severn expressed confidence that the new venture would be a welcome addition to the building and the broader local area.
"The complementary business hours mean we will not compete for customer traffic or parking spaces, creating a positive arrangement for both businesses," the letter stated. "I believe this new venture will bring positive benefits to our commercial community."
Operational Details and Environmental Considerations
The facility is planned to operate between 8am and 6pm, with customers primarily consisting of veterinary practitioners and private individuals. Deceased pets will be received from local vet services, and individuals will have the option to either bring pets directly to the crematorium or arrange for collection by staff.
Applicants have assured that traffic movements generated by the business will be accommodated by the existing road network, with no external alterations proposed apart from the installation of a flue from the incinerator. Strict EU regulations ensure that emissions from the cremator are odourless and should not impact the amenity of local residents.
Economic Benefits and Job Creation
The planning document highlights significant economic benefits, stating: "This proposal will result in the diversification of a successful business with the immediate creation of at least two full time jobs with scope for further job creation as the business grows. Such a business would be sustainable providing a new facility in the region that does not currently exist."
Public Consultation Period
Residents have until 15 April to submit feedback on the plans. Full details of the proposal and instructions on how to submit comments are available on Lichfield District Council’s planning portal under reference number 26/00381/COU.
