McDonald's Drive-Thru at Birmingham Airport Clears Another Planning Hurdle

Plans for a new McDonald's drive-thru restaurant at Birmingham Airport have progressed further, with Solihull Council approving additional modifications to the project. The fast-food giant's venture, located at Car Park 6 near the Airport Way, Viking Road, and Jetstream Road roundabout, has overcome another key planning obstacle.

Recent Planning Developments

In February, McDonald's submitted an application to amend aspects of the approved design, specifically concerning custom lettering on the building and the placement of a digital screen. According to planning agents Lichfield, the changes involve slightly altering the white acrylic "McDonald's" text on the south-east elevation and relocating a single digital screen that displays menu and price information in the drive-thru queue area.

Mark Andrews, Solihull Council's head of planning, design, and engagement services, issued a decision notice on April 8, granting planning consent for these adjustments. This follows initial approval for the restaurant, which was granted last year, and the signing off of preparatory conditions in September.

Background and Context

The project has been in development for some time, with McDonald's receiving council approval for the drive-thru at Birmingham Airport's Car Park 6 previously. The latest application, referenced as PL/2026/00272/ADV, focuses on fine-tuning signage elements to meet operational needs and aesthetic standards.

This approval marks a significant step forward for the restaurant, which aims to serve travelers and airport visitors with convenient fast-food options. The digital screen relocation is intended to enhance customer experience by optimizing visibility and flow in the drive-thru lane.

Other Planning Applications in Solihull

While the McDonald's project advances, Solihull Council is also considering several other live planning applications across the borough. These include:

  • Extensions and conversions at residential properties in Shirley, Marston Green, Earlswood, and Olton.
  • Tree reduction works at 51 Coleshill Road in Marston Green.
  • Installation of external extraction flues at commercial units in Shirley.
  • Demolition and new self-build dwelling proposals in Earlswood.

These applications highlight ongoing development activity in the area, reflecting broader trends in construction and urban planning within Solihull.

The continued progress of the McDonald's drive-thru at Birmingham Airport underscores the council's role in facilitating business growth while addressing community and regulatory standards. As the project moves closer to completion, it is expected to contribute to the airport's amenities and local economic activity.
