Sandwell Council Approves Housing, Demolition & EV Hub in Key Week
Sandwell Council's Week: Housing, Demolition & EV Hub

Sandwell Council has made a series of significant planning decisions this week, shaping the future of several sites across the borough. The rulings include the transformation of a historic club into homes, the demolition of a troubled pub, and the approval of a new electric vehicle charging hub near the M5.

From Social Club to New Homes in Bearwood

Planners have given the green light to convert the vacant, century-old Corks Social Club in Bearwood, Smethwick, into new housing. The scheme, submitted by Tusq Construction, was approved despite objections from the council's own highways department regarding a complete lack of parking spaces.

Council officers justified the decision by reasoning that the proposed townhouses and flats would generate significantly less on-street parking demand than the former bustling members' club ever did.

Action on Anti-Social Behaviour in Oldbury

In a move to tackle persistent local issues, the council has approved the demolition of the derelict Perry Hill Tavern in Oldbury. The empty pub had become a notorious focal point for anti-social behaviour, with repeated break-ins and disturbances plaguing nearby residents.

The demolition is intended to make the site safe immediately. It is understood that plans for new housing on the land will be formally submitted to the local authority in the near future.

EV Charging Station Gets Green Light Near M5

Sandwell Council has also approved plans for a new 'mini service station' adjacent to the M5 in West Bromwich. The development will feature:

  • Four new commercial units.
  • Crucial rapid electric vehicle (EV) charging points.

The site, next to Intersection House, is in an out-of-centre location that conflicts with some planning policies. However, the scheme was passed due to the recognised necessity of providing rapid EV charging facilities close to the strategic highway network.

Council Blocks Pub Demolition for Shop in Old Hill

Not all applications were successful this week. The council rejected a proposal to demolish the empty Crown Inn pub in Old Hill and replace it with a shop and car park.

Officials thwarted the plan, stating a preference to reserve the land for future housing or employment space, which is deemed a greater local need. Planners argued the retail proposal would undermine existing land allocations and that there was no identified need for more shops in the immediate area.
