A BirminghamLive investigation has uncovered that 168 suspected criminals have been wanted by West Midlands Police for more than a decade, with some cases stretching back decades. These fugitives are accused of serious crimes, including murder, terrorism, abduction, rape, and robbery, leaving victims and their families without justice or closure. Many of these individuals may never be found, as they could be hiding in the UK or abroad under false identities.
Long-Standing Cases
Among the most notable cases is Luke Anderson, who disappeared after an alleged attempted murder in Coventry in 2001. Anderson was 19 at the time of the attack on a doctor outside the Falcon Hotel and has not been seen since. Richard Henry is wanted for a 2003 murder, but police know his location: he is incarcerated in a US prison. Two unidentified men are sought for a murder dating back to 1975, while another unnamed suspect is wanted for rioting in 2004.
Terrorism and Other Offenses
The list includes 18 terrorism offenses, as well as charges of abduction, kidnapping, and robbery. Eight suspects are wanted for murder, but their whereabouts remain unknown. West Midlands Police released the data following a freedom of information request, highlighting the frustration detectives face as these cases have hit dead ends. Without significant new clues or public tip-offs, many of these fugitives are unlikely to be apprehended.
Current Most Wanted
Sayed Hersi, from Birmingham, has been on the run for six years for breaching a court order. He is the longest-serving member of the force's publicly available most wanted list. The investigation underscores the ongoing challenge of tracking down fugitives who have evaded capture for years.
