Aston Villa have reportedly entered the race to sign Juventus and France defender Pierre Kalulu, with the player's potential summer exit linked to the Italian giants' Champions League fate.
Villa Join Premier League Pursuit of Versatile Defender
According to reports from Italian media outlet Calciomercato, Aston Villa are showing concrete interest in 25-year-old Pierre Kalulu. The versatile Frenchman, who can operate as a centre-back, right-back, or right midfielder, is also said to be on the radar of Premier League rivals Manchester United and Tottenham Hotspur.
Any move for the player is expected to be finalised in the summer transfer window rather than during the current January business. Juventus, who signed Kalulu from AC Milan for a fee of €20 million, are believed to be holding out for an offer in the region of €30 million (approximately £26 million).
Champions League Qualification Holds the Key
The report suggests that a significant factor in determining Kalulu's availability will be Juventus's final league position. If Juventus fail to qualify for next season's UEFA Champions League, the club may be forced to sell key assets to balance their finances, potentially opening the door for a Premier League move.
This season, Kalulu is enjoying his finest form since moving to Italy, with performances arguably matching his level when he won the Serie A title with AC Milan in 2022. He has become a crucial figure on the right flank for Massimiliano Allegri's side.
Financial Power of English Clubs Could Seal Deal
Calciomercato notes that the financial strength of England's top clubs means meeting Juventus's €30 million valuation would not be a problem. Such a sale would also represent a useful capital gain for the Turin-based club.
For Aston Villa, managed by Unai Emery, securing a player of Kalulu's quality and versatility would be a major statement of intent as they look to cement their status as a top-four contender and regular Champions League participant.
