Beaten from distance for the first goal but pulled off a fine save to deny Joao Palhinha. Not to blame for the defeat.
Matty Cash - 5
Produced a fine cross for Emi Buendia’s late header but otherwise struggled, as did most of the team.
Victor Lindelof - 6
Has enjoyed a fine season when called upon but this was his poorest display. Caught in no-man’s land for the Richarlison goal.
Tyrone Mings - 5
A frustrating season with injury continued with another difficult performance. His passing was wayward throughout.
Ian Maatsen - 5
Given the runaround too often in the first half. Seemed to struggle with the physicality and made little impact in attack.
Youri Tielemans - 5
Presumably kept in the team for leadership but could do nothing to stop the chaos around him. Set pieces were a disappointment.
Lamare Bogarde - 5
Struggled badly in the early stages but kept fighting and improved as the game wore on. Still a tough outing.
Jadon Sancho - 4
A hugely disappointing showing from a player who had a genuine chance to play his way into Thursday’s team. Did nothing of note.
Ross Barkley - 5
Another player who submitted probably his worst display of the campaign. Cannot play on Thursday as he is not part of the Europa League squad.
Morgan Rogers - 5
Kept on for the whole 90 minutes despite looking jaded. Tried his best to get Villa going but kept running into trouble.
Tammy Abraham - 5
Made a half-hearted effort to close down Gallagher for the first goal. Starved of service and could not get into the game.
