Birmingham City sign Jhon Solis on loan from Girona
Birmingham City confirm Jhon Solis signing

Birmingham City have moved swiftly to strengthen their midfield options, confirming the arrival of Colombian midfielder Jhon Solis on loan from Spanish La Liga side Girona.

The 21-year-old has joined the Blues until the end of the current season, with the deal understood to include a provision for a permanent transfer. This marks the Championship club's second acquisition of the January transfer window, following the signing of left-back Kai Wagner from Philadelphia Union.

Who is Birmingham City's new midfielder?

Jhon Solis is a product of the famed academy at Atletico Nacional in Medellin. He made the switch to European football with Girona in the summer of 2023.

During his time in Spain, Solis made 49 appearances in La Liga, though the majority came as a substitute under coach Michel. He scored his sole professional goal for the club against Alaves last season.

His experience includes minutes in the Champions League during the 2024/25 campaign, featuring against elite opponents such as eventual winners Paris Saint-Germain, as well as Premier League giants Liverpool and Arsenal.

What does Solis bring to Chris Davies's squad?

The young Colombian's arrival directly fills the squad vacancy created by the departure of Scottish midfielder Marc Leonard, who has moved on during this transfer period.

However, Blues manager Chris Davies may need to be patient as he integrates his new signing. Solis has not played a competitive match for a month and has not started a game since Girona's shock Copa del Rey exit to third-tier side Ourense on 3 December 2025.

His acquisition provides Davies with a technically-gifted, young option in the centre of the park, one with valuable exposure to high-level European football despite his limited starting opportunities at Girona.

Birmingham's January business gathers pace

The signing of Jhon Solis signals Birmingham City's intent to be active in the winter market as they look to bolster their squad for the second half of the Championship season.

With the loan structure including a likely route to a permanent deal, the club are investing in a player they believe can develop and contribute both immediately and in the long term. All eyes will now be on when Solis can regain match fitness and make his debut for his new club.
