Birmingham City Release Keshi Anderson, Terminating Contract Six Months Early
Birmingham City release Keshi Anderson from contract

Birmingham City have confirmed the departure of winger Keshi Anderson, with the club agreeing to terminate his contract six months ahead of its scheduled expiry.

Mid-Season Exit for Title Winner

The decision sees Anderson become a free agent with immediate effect, freeing up a squad place for Blues during the January transfer window. The 30-year-old had been with the club since initially arriving on trial in the summer of 2023 under then-head coach John Eustace.

Anderson made a total of 92 appearances for Birmingham, but his final game proved to be the 3-0 defeat to Watford on New Year's Day. He was substituted in the 77th minute of that match and has not been included in the squad for the two subsequent fixtures, alongside teammates Marc Leonard and Lyndon Dykes.

A Struggle to Replicate League One Form

This season, Anderson featured in 19 Championship matches, with seven of those being starts. However, he was unable to consistently reproduce the influential form that made him a key figure in the club's record-breaking League One title win last term.

During that triumphant campaign, the attacker contributed seven goals and five assists, performances that saw him come close to winning the club's Player of the Year award, narrowly losing out to Christoph Klarer.

Squad Implications and What Comes Next

Anderson's departure leaves Birmingham's options in wide areas noticeably thinner. The club now has only Demarai Gray, Patrick Roberts, and Liverpool loanee Lewis Koumas as recognised options in those positions, increasing the urgency for reinforcements before the transfer window closes.

For Anderson, the early release provides an opportunity to secure a move to a new club during the current registration period. His experience as a League One winner and Championship player is likely to attract interest from elsewhere in the football pyramid.
