Birmingham City manager Chris Davies has publicly confirmed the club's intention to secure winger Patrick Roberts on a full-time basis this January.
Roberts Impresses on Loan
The 28-year-old attacker, who is currently on loan from Sunderland, scored his third goal for Blues in Saturday's Championship draw with Swansea City. Roberts has now contributed three goals and five assists in 21 league appearances this season, establishing himself as one of the club's most effective summer signings.
Strategic Move for January Window
Davies revealed that internal discussions are actively underway to convert the loan into a permanent transfer. "We are looking at that," the Blues boss stated. "I know those conversations are taking place and we are hopeful, but there are a few parts of that that have to work. That would be ideal."
Completing the deal this month would carry a significant strategic benefit for Birmingham's squad building. Championship rules permit only five loan players in a matchday squad. With Eiran Cashin recently recalled by Brighton, Roberts is one of four current loanees. Making his move permanent would therefore free up a valuable loan slot, giving the club greater flexibility in the winter transfer market.
Fan Reaction and Next Steps
The potential permanent signing is likely to be welcomed by supporters who have seen Roberts become a key creative force. The club's hierarchy is now working to finalise the complex negotiations with Sunderland before the window closes.
Should the deal be completed, it would represent a major coup for Chris Davies, securing a proven Championship performer for the long term and allowing Birmingham to pursue further reinforcements.
