Birmingham City Striker Kyogo Furuhashi Ruled Out for Season After Shoulder Surgery
Birmingham City have confirmed that striker Kyogo Furuhashi will not play again this season after undergoing shoulder surgery. The Japanese forward missed the Blues' recent 1-0 defeat to Blackburn Rovers on Good Friday and is now set to be absent for the final six matches of the Championship campaign.
Long-Standing Injury Issue Addressed
Kyogo has gone under the knife to correct a persistent shoulder problem that he has been managing since before his transfer to Birmingham City from Rennes last summer. The 31-year-old previously missed numerous games during his time at Celtic due to the same issue.
Despite the injury causing minimal disruption in his first season with Blues, where he scored three goals in 31 appearances across all competitions, Furuhashi has now opted for the necessary surgical intervention.
Manager Chris Davies Provides Update
Blues manager Chris Davies revealed the news following the Blackburn defeat, stating, "Kyogo is out for the season. He's had his shoulder operated on, which was an ongoing thing that he kept trying to put off. In the end we decided to get it done and then he's back for pre-season."
The decision to proceed with surgery now ensures Furuhashi will be available for the club's pre-season preparations, though his future at St Andrew's remains uncertain.
Future at Birmingham City in Doubt
Whether Kyogo has a long-term future with Birmingham City is now subject to debate. The club would have considered offers for the striker during the January transfer window, and a potential move to Major League Soccer was not ruled out before the deadline passed on March 26.
Kyogo has struggled to replicate the impressive form he showed at Celtic, where he scored 85 goals in 165 games. Since breaking his Championship duck with a goal against Sheffield Wednesday in January, he has managed just 16 minutes of play across the following 13 matches.
Currently, Furuhashi finds himself behind fellow strikers Jay Stansfield, Marvin Ducksch, and August Priske in manager Chris Davies' tactical plans. This development represents another setback for a summer signing that has yet to deliver the expected impact for Birmingham City.
