Cambridge United's head coach Neil Harris has issued a cautiously optimistic update regarding the condition of the Abbey Stadium pitch, ahead of the club's scheduled FA Cup third-round tie against Birmingham City.
Pitch Hopes Improve Despite Incoming Rain
The crucial cup fixture is set for a 5:45pm kick-off on Saturday, but its status remains under a cloud due to the recent severe winter weather. Cambridge's League Two match against Grimsby Town was called off last weekend because of a frozen playing surface, raising immediate concerns for the Birmingham game.
However, Harris has indicated the situation is more promising now. "From what I'm told, it's going to be in a lot better position than last week," the U's boss stated. "The weather has obviously picked up but I think it's more a fear of what's coming with the rain than anything else."
Saturday Lunchtime Inspection Planned
With heavy rain forecast for Cambridge throughout Friday and into the night, coupled with temperatures hovering near freezing, the club is taking no chances. A definitive pitch inspection has been scheduled for lunchtime on Saturday, just hours before the evening kick-off.
This will provide a final verdict on whether the match can proceed, giving travelling Birmingham City supporters from the Second City clarity after a night of snow in their own region.
Financial Stakes Add to Urgency
The fixture represents a significant financial opportunity for the League Two side, hosting Championship opposition in the prestigious competition. The club is therefore understandably eager for the game to go ahead, provided the pitch is deemed safe and playable.
Harris concluded with a note of personal confidence, saying, "I'm sure the club will update everyone in the next 24 hours but at the moment, as a coach, I'm confident the game is going to be on." All eyes will now be on the Abbey Stadium at midday on Saturday for the official decision.
