Wolves are reportedly targeting out-of-contract Sunderland midfielder Dan Neil for their summer rebuild following relegation, as first reported by the Express & Star on Thursday.
Who is Dan Neil?
The 24-year-old Sunderland academy graduate has made over 200 appearances for the Black Cats, helping them rise from League One to the Premier League. However, his game time has been limited under manager Regis Le Bris, leading to a loan move to Ipswich Town in January as he seeks a second consecutive promotion.
Playing Style and Versatility
Neil is consistently described as versatile. Primarily a number eight, he likes to get forward, link play, and contribute to build-up. While not a prolific scorer—his best season tally is four goals—he is technically classy, comfortable in tight spaces, and effective at connecting play. He has also filled in at full-back when needed.
What Has Been Said About Him
Former Sunderland manager Tony Mowbray praised Neil's progression: “He’s growing, and if he keeps on growing he will undoubtedly play at the top level and bring his qualities to a really good team.”
Neil himself expressed determination after limited Premier League opportunities: “Not getting many chances in the Premier League this season was disappointing, but there’s definitely a little bit of fire in my belly to get back.” He added: “I’m desperate to get back to the Premier League, get that feeling of getting promoted again.”
What He Could Bring to Wolves
Neil's experience, leadership (having captained Sunderland), and top-flight ambition make him an attractive option for Wolves as they rebuild. If he doesn't secure promotion with Ipswich, a move to Molineux could offer him the chance to prove himself in the Premier League.
