A former West Bromwich Albion goalkeeper who played in the Premier League has ended his career at the remarkable age of 44. Joe Murphy, who made two top-flight appearances for the Baggies, has called time on a career spanning almost three decades and over 700 professional matches.
Early Career at West Brom
Murphy joined West Brom in 2002 following their promotion to the Premier League, with the club paying compensation to Tranmere Rovers for the highly rated goalkeeper. He made just two appearances in the top flight and seven in total before leaving the club.
Long Journey Through the Leagues
After departing Albion, Murphy went on to play for Coventry City and Scunthorpe United, among others, before returning to Tranmere Rovers in 2020. This season, at the age of 44, he made 22 appearances for Tranmere as they secured their League Two survival.
Reflection on a Remarkable Career
Confirming his retirement, Murphy said: “I think it’s time to step away and have some family time and think about my next chapter. I’ve had a good stint – people average about an 8/9 year career and I’ve had three times that. I’m just happy with how long I’ve lasted, I’ve made some good memories, made some good friends, played at the highest level for club and country, and played a lot of games. Now I have some time, I will be able to take a step back and look back at what I’ve achieved. It’s been quite a journey.”
Murphy retires with a legacy of longevity and dedication, having played at the highest level and amassed over 700 appearances in a career that began in the 1990s.
